The encounter prompted Biff to give up on his “American Dream” career track, as he had completely lost faith in his father and in the values he had taught them. Biff calls his father a liar, phony, and fake. Then, the woman comes out of the bathroom. He tells his father that he failed math and will not be able to graduate, and asks for his help. Willy then finds himself at the hotel in Boston with "the Woman" as someone knocks on the door. This time, he sees young Bernard tell Linda that Biff failed math and got on a train to Boston to find his father. When Willy arrives to meet them for dinner, he tells them that he was fired and Biff tries to tell him what happened with Oliver, but Willy goes off into another memory. Biff is upset because, after waiting for six hours to see Bill Oliver to ask him to finance their business idea, Oliver declined and didn't even remember him. “I am going to have to badger him until he gives it to me.Biff and Happy meet at a restaurant, where Happy flirts with a girl. Biff was Willy’s oldest son and Willy was really crazy about him. His thinking and behaviour was the outcome of his father’s mental illness and instability. I told him it was my one desire to direct the film of Sweeney Todd.”Īlexander pauses and breaks into a wide grin. Identity Loss Death of a Salesman describes a man, Biff Loman, who had lost his identity and he lacks the ability to accept change within himself and the society. “I just saw Steve [Sondheim) again at the Kennedy Center. His dream is to go back to New York and direct musicals. It’s frustrating after a long time if you care about what you’re doing.” We always tape long and it’s necessary to cut anywhere from two to nine minutes. They take a piece of something here and a piece of something there. Invariably, I don’t think there’s been a single performance of Seinfeld which was actually the way I did it. “I miss musicals because they are just joyous to do. Though his TV and movie career are going gangbusters, Alexander craves the roar of the crowd and the smell of the greasepaint. He seems to be the character everyone touchstones to. But I don’t know why people gravitate to him so much. When Biff and Happy are talking, Biff makes the plan that hes going to ask for a loan. Death of a Salesman is a good example of such ambivalence. “Everywhere I go somebody says, ‘I am just like George’ or ‘I know someone like George.’ You know, George is a very heroic loser. Its not specified here why hes been away. Growing up in Livingston, N.J., visions of singing and dancing on Broadway filled his head.Īlexander doesn’t really know why George has become part of pop culture. He even nabbed a prestigious Directors Guild Award nomination last year for stepping behind the camera to direct an episode.īut Alexander never dreamed of TV stardom. Since Seinfeld premiered, Alexander has received two Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, won an American Television Award and two American Comedy Awards for his work on the series. Seinfeld often calls him “Biff,” referring to salesman Willy Loman’s hapless son from Arthur Miller’s play Death of a Salesman. Over the last four years, fans of the hit NBC sitcom have watched George get fired from his job as a real estate agent, go from one hopeless job interview to another, move back home with his neurotic, overbearing parents and even lose his girlfriends to women. And the world seems to love Jason Alexander, who has become one of TV’s most popular funny guys, thanks to his role as George Costanza, stand-up comic Jerry Seinfeld’s nebbish, Angst-ridden friend, on Seinfeld.
